Purging fundamentals for safety and occupational health professionals (Safety and Occupational Health)

Purging in the natural gas industry is a critical safety procedure designed to ensure that pipelines, equipment, and facilities are free of flammable gases before they are put into service or maintained. According to the American Gas Association’s Purge Manual, proper purging minimizes the risk of explosions and fires by removing potentially hazardous gases from systems prior to work being performed. This process involves the intentional displacement of natural gas with an inert gas or air, allowing operators to safely manage the transition from one state to another while ensuring that any residual gas is safely vented, contained, or mitigated.

The manual emphasizes the importance of adhering to established protocols during purging operations to mitigate risks. Safety impacts are significantly influenced by factors such as the materials involved, environmental conditions, and the skill level of personnel conducting the purge. Inadequate purging can lead to dangerous situations, including the accumulation of explosive mixtures, which can result in catastrophic failures.

Since OSHA began collecting records over 40 years ago, 66 of 450 severe pipeline incidents (15%) mention purging specifically. Moreover, some events have occurred in the last 6 months highlighting the inherent risks of the process.   The implementation of proper procedures not only protects workers and the surrounding community but also enhances the overall integrity of the natural gas infrastructure.

Furthermore, the AGA’s guidelines highlight the necessity of monitoring and testing throughout the purging process. Continuous assessment of gas concentrations and the atmosphere within the work area helps ensure that safety thresholds are maintained. By employing effective monitoring techniques and ensuring thorough training for personnel, the natural gas industry can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents during purging operations. Adherence to the AGA's purge manual is essential for maintaining a safe working environment and safeguarding public health.
